Neverwinter MMO
« on: August 24, 2010, 09:04:09 PM »
Atari & Cryptic Studios announce Neverwinter, coming Q4 2011.

Yeah, it seems the rumors were, in fact, real enough. There is a Neverwinter MMO coming out... and I'm kind of cringing. Five classes, most definitely an MMO with one persistent world, probably another monthly fee title, and only a mission creator so far for a toolset.

It's a bit early to say for sure what they're putting into the game, but so far, I'm not really liking the news. I'll leave that up to everyone else. It does bring to light about the fate of the region through and after the Spellplague, though. Either way, I think I'll stick with the classic Neverwinter Nights here (And no, not the AOL one).

I hate to say it but I told you all 4E was worlds of warcraft on paper.
Crom, I have never prayed to you before. I have no tongue for it. No one, not even you, will remember if we were good men or bad. Why we fought, or why we died. All that matters is that two stood against many. That's what's important! Valor pleases you, Crom... so grant me one request. Grant me revenge! And if you do not listen, then to HELL with you!

Aww, c'mon, Shade, it's gonna be great!

You can have just as great roleplay with 4th ed as with 3.0 or 3.5. You have to work at it harder in 4e, true. It's just too bad that the 4e system encourages the hack 'n slash over the RP now. Or at least that's been my experience.

Maybe with PnP, Tsu, but MMOs in general don't promote RP, the population is large and the effect you can have on the world is small.   Imagine LOTN with 1000 times the population but no DMs.    Your just another nameless and faceless adventurer with minimal customization options that can't influence the world and spents most of his/her time grinding xp, currency or reputation... its not pretty.

I don't know how good of an MMO it will be but I doubt it'll be a better RP atmosphere.
DM Cat is watching you roleplay.

I've always thought of 4e as a completely different game to its predecessor. 3.5 is still my choice  for RP and always will be. (For Fantasy that is. I also maintain a strong liking for Sci-fi and steampunk.) But 4e isn't without its merits. Essentially, i think of it more like a boardgame like monopoly or something than i do as an RPG, and i respect it well that way.

But yeah, I'd flay the skin off of the love of my life with a rusty shovel and push her screaming skinless insides into a furnace before ever touching an MMO. Sorry to be so graphic, but that's how it is. Like Sakes said, nothing signifigant can be done in them, no matter how many times you save the world. Ironic, huh?

The Anonymity is agonizing, and Its definitely necessary to be able to influence the world you are in. That, or single-player where the game has to come to an end, so that i can say "That was cool, whats my next story?". All an MMO is, is a money trap that would replace my usual ritual of buying a brand new game every month or so. And besides, you've all heard the articles about MMO addictions. WOW has literally killed people.

Well, they're trying to call it a "Co-operative Online Multiplayer Game", where you are in a team of five people (AI or players) to take on the adventures. Seems more like it's just dungeon crawling and... dungeon crawling. If there's going to be any RP aspect to it, I sure as heck am not seeing it.

Some MMO's aren't too bad... when you first start them at least. It's a shiny, rich world with a lot of quests and things to do, but once you get to level 20 or even 30, you start noticing that you've already done the same thing over again... just in another part of the world. This one at least won't require 30 or 50 man raids to get something done, or regular intervals of PvP. As for WoW literally killing people... EverQuest has been doing that before them. ;>.> What, do people think they're kidding when WoW tells them once in a while to, "Play in moderation", and Guild Wars saying, "You've been playing for # hours. Please take a break,"?

Though, I blame the limited play time of 1 month for each $15 as more of the culprit.

It might not be so bad if you're used to just teaming up to do adventures, but I don't think I'd pay monthly just to do that when I can boot up something else and get similar, if not more. Besides, Cryptic Studios are a little low on my list of 'quality' game development (Check their history).

I completely agree Tsu, good roleplay comes from good roleplayers the context doesn't matter. As Sakes already pointed out, and I agree RP can be difficult in MMOs for the reasons already stated. You have to rely on close knit groups and immersion can become difficult. I'll reserve judgement until it is released but I remain skeptical.

Could be cool.   I think it's coming out around the same time as The Old Republic, which is going to be huge, so the timing might not be the best.  Pretty certain I will be getting The Old Republic.

When I first saw the announcement for this, it seemed more Diabloesque.  You play with a few people, on a server, or a hosted game, and go do stuff, not as a large scale MMO.

Basically the world you're playing in already exists, but you have people log in to join you.

If anything has been posted recently I haven't seen it, but that's what I got out of it.

Its near impossible to really RP well (read: at all) on an MMO though.

This is true.  In WOW, even those servers designated as "role-play" have little rp going on from what I've seen.  I think you'd need to form a guild members of which make a concerted effort to pull it off.  WOW post cataclysm is tons of fun in other ways, though.  They've had years to improve and tweek the game and it shows...
