Short Version: Volfen is the result of a breeding program designed to create sorcerers by mating other sorcerers with strong powers, under the hopes that the ability to control magic can be passed along to a child like physical traits of the parents.
Long Version: Although not possessing intimate knowlage of genetics anyone whos studied parents and their offspring can tell that the parents have a large bearing on the childs physical appearance. And so the idea became that if those naturally talented in controling magic could be bred, it would create an invicable army.
One organization eventually decided to put a program into development to mate talented sorcerers to see if they produced off-sping with silimar or greater powers. Unfortunitely as it takes several years even for pure human children to come of age to the point where it can be told if they have any powers, and only a small percentage of the children showed any talent, and when they did it varied by degrees and usefulness.
Then came a breakthrough when they managed to secure the cooperation of a willing Sorceress adept at the manipulation of time. By greatly speeding up time on her own body during pregancy she gave birth to over 50 childen in just under 5 years. The process aged her greatly and although she was just under 200 when she began she was the equiviant of 450 years of age when she stopped, even slowly time to a near stop when she slept between pregancys to avoid age.
Her mate was a highly talented sorcerer with a large amount of Red Dragon blood, possibliy only a generation or two removed. He showed great ability with all magic, although fire remained his primary field of expertise.
She believed she was doing this to secure create a force to bring out order and security. However she soon learned that her masters had other intentions in mind. Eventually she that only 2 out of the 50 children she borne had shown prowess in magic. The rest had been killed to cover up any hints of the program The remaining children were held in facitlies to be trained to hone their power to make them powerful weapons.
Outraged, she turned on her former masters and fled, at the time still pregant with her last child.
Eventually she used her charms and ability to marry a wealthy noble. Slowing her body she gave birth to the child she had secretly been carrying after their marriage so it would appear he was the father.
She left her old life behind and was so ashamed she never told her son the truth, even when she realised he had gained the powers of his real father. Even after his subsquent banishment he was never told.
Eventually her meddling with time on her body took their toll. Haunted by visions of his dying mother calling to him during reverie, Volfen disobeyed his banishment and returned home to find his mother old and frail. On her death bed she told him the terrible truth of his birth, and a warning that his father was still alive, and would be hunting for him. Her final request was he live his own life and never allow anyone to use him and his powers as a tool for domination.
Shocked by his mothers sudden death and horrid truth of his origins Volfen wandered before finally returning to the closet thing to a home he had known. He now seeks to learn more of his draconic orgins in the hope it will allow him to better control his powers.
