General Discussion / Reason to Roleplay
« on: February 04, 2006, 05:53:00 AM »
Roleplaying is an immersion into a reality defined by the imaginations of those who share in it. How far you go, how deeply you submerse yourself into this virtual reality, depends largely upon your own creative abitily and/or creative will. Many of us seek to refine and expand such ability; many of us desire to separate ourselves from the mundane existance of ordinary life. For this, many of us choose roleplay as our choice vehicle for entertainment.

That said, now imagine you're in game.  You are trying with all your might to forget what Tina, your secretary and secret lover, had told you during a formal luncheon . . . trying to forget how she had held a partially eaten chicken fry halfway to her delicate mouth . . . trying to forget the look on her face as she looked at the fry but spoke to you . . . trying to forget the softness of her voice as she said, "I'm pregant,"  then continued to nibble away at the fry, as casually as if the child were a chicken fry, and she thought you might enjoy the taste of one. It's hard enough to forget such things, hard enough to forget that it was you at Burger King rather than your character, hard enough to remember that Raphanzo the Mage has nothing to with Tina or your child in her belly.  So when Joe Player says something like, "OOC::brb, the baby's crying again," escaping the mundane instead excapes You.

Indeed, it's not easy to portray a character, especially when they are of an era both ancient and imaginary. NWN has improved a great many facets of roleplay. Yet, not all. The primary agency for depicting our characters is written language, typed via the talk channels. Expression, tone of voice, accent, gestures, emotion, and not to mention the actual words they speak . . . all these things are done by typing them. It can be a lot to read! Particularly, in common areas where a number of people are each "type-depicting" their characters, text can scroll on and on, much like a microsoft license agreement. We must sort all that text into who's talking to who. Filtering out OOC comments then becomes an annoyance as well as a distraction.

We roleplay to have fun most of all though.  I'll even chuckle over an OOC comment from time to time.   But more often, I try to ignore it, and wait for it to pass, trying not to lose character for the while.  So, please, out of respect for your fellow players, limit public OOC chatter and resort the rest to private tells.

Information / Contraband
« on: February 01, 2006, 03:04:05 AM »
Contraband = 0 value items of various size, wieght, and descrition.

We'd need a way to aquire contraband. (perhaps via the lootscript, or otherwise convince the DMs to act like Easter Bunnies)

The Smuggler's Tool: (script, convo, item)
  • a function to set exchange locations
    • another to dropoff (conceal) contraband
      • Rolls a skill check... hide?
The Theif-Catcher Tool: (script, convo, item)
    • a function to detect hidden contraband
      • Rolls search check
Both Tools would also have a function to recover controband

    what else?

Scripted NPC behavior is expensive and unreliable.

I say we give the job to the players!  What's the reason in hiring mercenaries when you have army of sworn knights behind ya'?!

All we need is a few easy scripts, a set of guidelines to keep play fair, PC smugglers,  PC thief-catchers, and active imaginations!

    Agreed, LW.

The Cities and larger port towns could affored to fight drug trafficing at port and gate.  A city would have better luck in stopping persons and crime organizations within its own walls.  But I seriously doubt the entire coast could form the type of alliance necessary to ban a substance over a region like the Sword Coast.  Water routes and sparse settlement of the rural areas are ideal conditions for smuggling anything.  Moreso of contriband which can be conceal as easily as a drug.  Even if such an alliance could form, I imagine political and social intrigue would prove far too difficult to overcome.

    edit: horible typoing

Information / Invisibility: To See, or not To See

Invisibility: When Examined, Invisibility status icon
Stealth: When Examined, Movement Speed Decreased status icon

I'm in agreement with the rest of the post. But this one bit bothers me for the lonely reason of their being to heavy a lag factor.  The moment to react IC may pass before you even close the Examine Dialog! As well, a DM needs either a scripted item, or a LETO'd avatar to Examine PCs.

What cannot be simulated, must be roleplayed. The easiest solution IMO was already mentioned; send a tell to the PC in question.

Gulled into a rage by the mouth of a dark clad "witchy woman" (Ashara), Cien let her temper fly one night. The result left quite a stink around the campfire. The fuss began over a ~badger's~ death of all things. The creature died by the tiny hands a pixie named Kiki Morkai, on Cien's behest. The witch claimed it was murder, and that the druid, Keyn, should not allow such a "travesty to nature" to occur literally at his feet.

Cien claimed she innocent and that the badger was clear mad and foaming at the mouth, clearly intent to attack. She gave a convincing arguement, but examination of the dead badger called her bluff. The witch went on to claim that the creature had a wish to talk... talk! to Keyn. Cien, of course, thought that was ridiculous...badger's can't talk, everyone knows that. But the witch was convincing, and cien quickly lost track of the arguement between keyn and the witch after her bluff was plainly false. Instead, she started to let her ire build for one, being possibly found guilty of badger murder. As well, she didn't like how the witch was telling Keyn, who Cien considers a friend, what to do.

When the witch continued to refer to Cien as "the child", Cien lost control...cast a stinking cloud that enveloped the witch and half of the camp besides. Cien immediately fled, teary-eyed, and wailing.

    --------------

A few days later, Cien and the witch had another confrontation.  This time the witch easily beguiled Cien into a rage over the well-being of the witches domination over a pixie. The witch continued to gull Cien into such a rage that had her both shaking from anger, and crying. Cien eventually drew her weapons and managed a few magical buffs, but unable to control herself to cast them all. She ended with haste spell, and then charged headlong and at full speed at the witch. Blades directed with the intention to kill this time, Cien lunged with everything she had... only to pass directly throught witches illusion. She stumbled forward as the anticipated impact never came, and planted her forehead into the tree immediately behind the witches illusion.

...not much else is clear to cien beyone that, except that A'andie was at her side to offer a soothing touch when Cien awoke.
