Bug Reports / Broken Summons Token
« on: October 06, 2008, 09:46:55 PM »
The Belker summons token from Drolene's Mixing Pot gives you the wrong thing (air elemental).

Also the Quasit summon seems pretty powerful for a level 1 summon.

Player's Corner / Some thoughts on paladins from WotC
« on: September 24, 2008, 10:55:07 PM »
This article here (http://www.dndadventure.com/html/articles/art_clear_answer_for_paladins_WOTC.html) purports to be from Wizards of the Coast, owners of the D&D franchise. Whether it is or not, there's interesting food for thought on how to handle many situations an adventuring paladin might find him- or herself in.

Player's Corner / Put out that light!
« on: August 10, 2008, 06:30:08 PM »
Due to a large number of requests from adventurers in the area, both Merin's Stow and Drolene's Mixing Pot now carry an arcane implement known as "Shar's Touch". This mystical rod may be used on an item you possess to remove Light properties from it. No more Armor of Camouflage with a permanent bright orange light on it!

The rod is fairly inexpensive as arcane items go, priced at around 50gp. Note, however, that it is a single-use item.

General Discussion / Career opportunity!

A former player here (Kimber22) forwarded this to me today. I'm thinking of applying. I've always thought I could do well in the counter-counterterrorism sector ...

Craigslist supervillain seeks henchmen
Goons. Hired goons.

Much as we love our [strike]belittling, thankless toil[/strike] rewarding career at the Reg, we have from time to time mused that it would be good to find a vocation in which we could fully express our suppressed violent side. And so it is that today we find ourselves tempted by this Craigslist ad, apparently placed by authentic supervillain Jacque (The Zapper) Zerapi, who is in need of tidy sorts to form a 30-strong gang of henchmen.

The toughs are required for a "moderately-sized supervillain organisation with large expansion potential", and "must be willing to learn new skills, including but not limited to operation of specialised 'lightning guns'". Qualities that will help you along the recruitment process but are not pre-requisite include "flexible moral code" and "being a corrupt government official". An excellent career-change for many who feel they've achieved all they can in their present and somewhat restrictive roles, then, although the starting salary of £20,000 may deter even the casually avaricious.

We are naturally pleased to note that Mr Zerapi is happy to accept "femmes fatales" as well as the usual male thugs. He does go on to say that a "right-hand-man" position is frequently available to the right candidate, but we assume this is a momentary lapse in gender neutrality, perhaps occurring when the fantastical crimelord was distracted by the screaming coming from his luxury shark tank.

If you have ever felt you'd be fulfilled by strapping a secret agent to a table of doom whilst grinning maniacally, do apply and let us know how you get on. Obviously we shan't be throwing our own hench-hat into the ring, because [strike]the boss is watching[/strike] we are completely content in our present position. ®

Player's Corner / Incident of Unsportsmanlike Conduct
« on: July 20, 2008, 02:11:02 AM »
The DM staff would like to inform the players as to a recent incident on the server and our ruling on it.

Two players were in disguise (Player A and Player B) and called out by a third (Player C).  Player C did not have a way to detect that players A and B were disguised.  This is a simple mistake of metagaming, and could have been handled by the players in question simply talking about it and tells and deciding on a course of action that would be mutually beneficial.

Instead, the players A and B decided to escalate the situation by taking it personally, then attacking player C.  Shortly thereafter, another player (D) decided to enter the battle using OOC information.   That player D's character was not aware of the battle, but learned of the fight due to being in Ventrilo chat with player C.   Player D also brought another player (E) in who was not aware of the situation or that the information was gained by meta-gaming.

To be perfectly clear, this is what was at fault.

1. Player C should not have called out player A and B in disguise.  However, this was an honest mistake that should not have warranted the situation escalating.

2. Players A and B should have discussed the situation with player C calmly and came to an agreement, or if an agreement was not reachable, contacted a DM.

3. Player D should not have entered a battle his character had no IC way of knowing was going on.

4. Player D should not have given OOC information to another player as IC information.

While the first incident started the trouble, the DMs consider incidents 2, 3, and 4 to be violations of the unsportsmanlike conduct rules of the server.  As this is the first occurrence the DMs have decided to issue a public warning to all players.   This incident will be forgiven, but in the future any player who persists in unsportsmanlike conduct towards another will be given a week ban.

In short: If you have a disagreement with another player and do not either settle it in a civil manner or bring it to the DMs, you will be banned from the server for a week.

There will be no further warnings on the subject.  The DM staff is dedicated to making LOTN a friendly place for the staff and players.  Players who cannot remain calm and civil to their fellow players will not be welcome.

Player's Corner / Special Race Problems
« on: July 19, 2008, 09:47:10 PM »
All you players who have characters of a nonstandard race are going to be disappointed.

The addition of horses to 1.69 has screwed up special appearances and subraces.

This is something I've talked about with Barry_1066 of the CEP team, and he is working on a fix (even though this is not a CEP problem; it's 1.69 horses).

I will let you know how we progress on finding a solution. Meantime, speak to a DM if you wish your character converted to a standard race.

General Discussion / Instant Messengers
« on: July 13, 2008, 09:05:06 PM »
Here at Legacy of the North, the staff has standardized on using MSN Messenger as their instant messaging network.

I despise it.

Perhaps it's just the strong anti-Microsoft prejudice I harbor within. Or perhaps it's because it sucks.

Anyway, I personally would like to find a better messaging client that we can all agree on.

This is a personal preference, and I have not mentioned it to any of the other staff or players. I'll go along with what works for the majority. But let's see what the community feels.

I like Yahoo Messenger, but it has the problem like most of the others of not being full-screen application friendly. The two gaming messenger programs I've seen are XFire and GameSpy Comrade. Both look usable to me.

What are your opinions? Am I nuts for wanting to change away from something that everybody has and that basically works? Or does anyone out there agree with me that MSN Messenger is frustrating and is willing to make a change?

Player's Corner / What you need to play on LotN
« on: July 13, 2008, 04:33:56 PM »
We have updated to NWN patch 1.69 and CEP 2.1!

You'll need these things to play:
 NWN patch 1.69. You can get this through the NWN Update button, or Windows users can download the 1.69 Critical Rebuild.
 CEP v2.1c. You can get that from the Neverwinter Vault. For the self-installing Windows exe, click here. For the 7-Zip archive (for you non-Windows users or control freaks), click here.
 The super-secret CEP 2.1c1 patch. Okay, it's not super-secret. But Barry_1066, one of the CEP Team guys, told me to use it. Anyway, you'll need to download it from here, unzip it, and put it in your hak folder.

Note that when you install the 1.69 patch, it backs up your override folder, and puts a few Bioware-provided files in there. Many animation and GUI overrides that worked with previous releases of NWN will not work with NWN patch 1.69. Therefore, your override folder should contain only these files:
-- iit_midmisc_029.tga
-- ls_car_01.dds
-- ls_car_01.tga
-- ls_car_01s.dds
-- ls_car_01s.tga
-- ls_car_03.dds
-- ls_car_03.tga
-- ls_car_03s.dds
-- ls_car_03s.tga

Bug Reports / Volo Rats problems
« on: June 29, 2008, 05:36:20 PM »
When you kill the rats, they drop pelts. Then you can skin them. Fix one.

Also the quest completion doesn't persist across resets, though the in-process steps do.

Player's Corner / Griefing and Other Unsportsmanlike Conduct
« on: June 28, 2008, 10:20:21 PM »
Recently, the staff has seen growing problems with OOC reaction to IC behavior. Agression that happens between characters is interpreted to be unfair or agressive between players, and disagreements and fights break out in OOC chatter and tells.

Let's stop that, shall we?

New policy: if a DM is presented with reasonable evidence and complaints of OOC fighting and/or griefing, or any other generally-unsportsmanlike conduct, I have asked them to ban the agressive party or parties for one week on first offense, one month on second offense, permanently on third offense.

As I have stated before: the DM staff and I are responsible for running a fun, low- to no-hassle gaming server. It's provided to you at no charge. I personally provide the server, the bandwidth, and the electricity to run it all. The DM's and builders give freely of their time because we enjoy seeing others enjoying themselves here. Players who cause repeated problems will be shown the door.

General Discussion / DGXPO 2008
« on: June 19, 2008, 11:02:50 PM »
Hey everybody, I just wanted to let you know I'll be gone this weekend (6/19 - 6/21) for DGXPO. Don't break anything too bad while I'm gone, ok?

General Discussion / PnP mapping with AutoRealm
« on: June 11, 2008, 03:23:26 AM »
Is anyone out there any good with any of the various D&D campaign map-maker programs? I know of Campaign Cartographer, Dundjinni, and AutoRealm.

Of the three, I like AutoRealm because it's free. But I still suck at it. And I have a map for a PnP campaign I'm playing in that I would like to have converted.

Does anyone have any good suggestions? Or, dare I hope, want to draw the map for me?

P.S.: Your answer will not gain you any favors on LotN!

Player's Corner / GDM Supmarsh
« on: June 10, 2008, 01:53:51 AM »
Alright folks, after a bit of a hiatus, we're resuming our Guest DM program. First out of the chute is ... Supmarsh!

Suppy has been a player here on LotN since it was TMB, and that means he's old. Be sure to hassle him about that, as he hasn't learned to work the Hellball machine yet.

Suppy will start soon, look for something interesting in a week or two!

Technical Support / Having lag problems? Read this.
« on: June 01, 2008, 05:16:44 PM »
I have it on good authority that one of the leading causes of lag and general server weirdness is OVERRIDES.

I've been chatting with Barry_1066 today, who is the CEP team lead. His PW (Annakolia) bans override use. His PW is huge, and is extremely sensitive to such things.

In particular, he states that animation overrides can really confuse the server, and so cause problems for everyone playing.

Therefore, if you are having lag issues, please empty out your override folder and restart your client, and see if the problems improve or go away.
