Player's Corner / peep!
« on: November 17, 2006, 05:53:29 AM »
If you haven't noticed, I've been away for quite awhile. Over the past few months I've been engrossed in nwn2 projects.  First, it was some hush-hush stuff I'm still not allowed to talk about; and now, I'm working on a cool project with DMFI as well as a few side projects.

Well, a pretty little birdy came singing of the great fun I've been missing ... so, I'm taking a break tonight to tread over the ol' tromping-grounds :)

Anyways ... now, noone can say they haven't heard a peep out of me :P

I think Sakes has a great idea here.  As has been stated numerous times in the past, players will always be prone to feeling some degree of intimidation when speaking with a DM. Not everyone has been so fortunate to make pleasant aquantainces with each and every DM; and fewer still become wrapped in bonds of friendship.

An elected person or persons ... spokespeople, intermediaries, jeeves ... as Sakes descriped has great potential in easing communication between players and DMs.

My idea for nomination/election/selection is to allow each DM to choose 3-5 players with whom communication flows freely at comfortable levels.  Pool the nominations, then allow the players to cast their votes.  The top 5 candidates fill the positions.  The idea is to structure something akin to the role of a presidential press secretary rather than a pesky lobbiest group.

What I'm suggesting here may seem far more involved than what anyone had in mind ... but I'm looking long term here: a structured outlet to filter the players [emotionally-clouded] venting into genuine empathetic and valuable feedback and cooperative solutions: on demand ... free of scheduling bedlam.

Although, I agree that the ... aggresive/proactive pace of the mIRC approach offers real-time communication and thus, [potentially] faster results.

Hope my ideas help ;)
~Abraxas77~

... cheers Bralius for the vote. That's much appreciated :) ... but, for the record, I stand aside for the moment as my free time ATM is stretched thin as halloween bubblegum.

I enjoy taking risks ... such as mixing things I enjoy with things relating to work.  I've managed to do this without injury ... ASFAIK ....

I've worked RP events and/or characters (developed in game: NWN) into stories for my creative writing classes.  I've submitted character portraits in my art classes.  And presently, I'm working on a database system for a PW server (not this one) as well as a web interface to view and modify the data ... which in turn will allow for rather limited control of the PW via the web interface.  This project will help fill out my resume ... and, hopefully, help land me a better job in the near future.

If not for these aspects, I imagine I'd have put NWN aside long ago.  I play very few other games ... unless solitaire counts ....

Ahh, ObViews, you've beat me to the post again ... and done a better job of posting my thoughts.   The one comment I wanted to make was/is: if we truely value RP over "crawling", why are we rewarded for "crawling" over RP?  This applies to XP as well as loot.

*prods the paradigm*

Aha! After a little more research, I found the reference to "justify" Cien's ill-temper towards Dode.
Quote
Saline: I wish I had a cute little dog to follow me around.
Belaar: *nods* as do I
Geno Null: But you do.
Dode: i'm glad i don't
Geno Null: You have a little cute dog right of you.
Belaar: *glances over shoulder* if it doesn't act nice...it can always be banished
Dode: i have a dog next to me yes, not a cute little one...
Geno Null: *pulls a mouthful of smoke from a pipe*
Saline: I don't see a dog.
Geno Null: Right here.
Dode: that's what you said it was...
Cien Morkai: cute dogs smile and lick your face
Cien Morkai: what!?
Saline: Are you seeing things?
Cien Morkai: you calling me a dog, mister?
Geno Null: Wow the dog speaks
Manara Kala: *comes back out bearing a pot of freshly cooked stew*
Geno Null: Cute little Chiuahuah......
Ael'Kathean: -looks over to Geno- ... Oh, such a perfect shot right now... -held onto the crossbow on his belt-
Saline: Picking on smaller people? That's not nice. *rests his hand on the hilt of his blade*
Cien Morkai: *wrinkles her nose*
Ael'Kathean: -snickers- Sir, I think ya better find a gnome t'get ya some spectacles.
Geno Null: *psuhes the dog around*

{... yadda yadda ...}

Cien Morkai: why don't you just go away
Dode: why don't you
Cien Morkai: because I was here first!
Saline: I can almost see.
Dode: and i will be last
Ael'Kathean: -clears his throat-
Ael'Kathean: Leave her alone.

{... yadda yadda ...}

Cien Morkai: Yeah, I'm not the one with such an ugly I gotta hide it like these misters
Richard Crowne: Yep, and her self-reliance has made us kind of fond of her.
Nikolaous: Iid b e best for everyone to sheath those weapons
Manara Kala: Ay. . This is camp. . fight where there's no fire
Geno Null: *yawns*
Ael'Kathean: Put 'em down.
Cien Morkai: they prolly got mountains of boils with green puss oozin' out and black stuff
Ael'Kathean: -a hand still gripping his spear-
Dode: i have no weapon
Geno Null: See, these peopel nothign but talk.
Dode: what ever makes you feel better tiny one
Ssz'Imza: Yes, nothing.
Ael'Kathean: -snickered-
Saline: *laughs*
Ael'Kathean: Nice hit, there
Saline: Nice.
Belaar: *soft chukle*
Cien Morkai: take off your mask ugly ... maybe ~then~ I'll be scared
Saline: That'll shut him the hell up.
Ssz'Imza: *sheaths his weapons*
Dode: i listen to no one but myself

{... yadda ...}

Cien Morkai: *to dode* good, then you won't mind me calling you orc face
Dode: if that's how you see it.

... and there you have it.  That's how Dode came to be on Cien's badside as well as earned the nickname, "OrcFace".

{BTW, I hope nobody minds my posting of people's RP ... but that also happened to be one particular instants of conflict that I enjoyed.  It was also a litte funny b/c Marna (a halforc) seemed to get a little offened indirectly by Cien's choice of words (she didn't really notice Marna's injured expressions at first).}

... thanks for the suggestion tsunami ... it's just that I tend to get caught up in my RP and forget to make notes like that ... then, when I get a chance I forget what was said or what I need to note ... then I just tell myself, "oh well, I have it in my logs somewhere ...."

lazy ... yeah ... maybe I should try to be a bit more OCD like that.

I was going through my logs and I found this:
Quote
Anarch: 'Ey
Dode: hello there
Anarch: You with the stick
Cien Morkai: what do ~you~ want, Orcface ... ants in you pants?
Dode: just stoping by to say hellop
Daisy WillowKnot: *glances around the campfire looks a little bit upset*
Cien Morkai: 'cause I'll give it to ya'
Dode: lol
Dode: be friendly little one
Anarch: Why you threatening the man with a stick.
Anarch: Yer as bad as the singing lady over there.
Cien Morkai: 'cause he's a Twizzle
Dode: i've never done anything to you
Anarch: She wanted to shoot me for being blue.
Cien Morkai: you were born .. thta's bad enough
Daisy WillowKnot: *shakes her head*

I hope it wasn't as bad in game as seems now ... just by reading it.  Whoever plays Dode, my apologies ... I  confused Dode with another character who Cien doesn't like.  I guess ... Cien was in a really grumpy mood that day and felt like lashing out a random stranger who was, appearently being friendly to her.

I save my logs b/c memory is ... not very good.  I honestly can't remember if Cien has/had any reason to be so rude to Dode ... if she ever even knew him before that encounter.  Maybe I should read my logs more often ... or figure out a better way keeping track of characters: who's meet who and what-not ....

Technical Support / Re: Audio Issue

Quote from: "BraliusMelchior"

If you read my last post about the memory errors, you can only imagine how annoying my computer is right now... but there so much crap I need to back up that I've been putting off formatting.

I just buy a new HDD. Then, my data from the old HDD slowly migrates to the new one until the new one becomes full ... then I buy a new HDD w/ a bigger capacity (though they seem to keep getting physically smaller) and so on and so forth ....

Technical Support / Audio Issue
« on: July 14, 2006, 09:30:51 AM »
Umm ... I'm not sure it's the same chirping noise ... but sound very similar.  Only for me, it happens not only with the stereo my PC is wired to, but also with my car stereo.  Also, for the stereo connected to my PC, it happens whether I'm in game or out of game.  It also happens with my alarm clock/stereo ... when the stereo part is turned off and with the volume turned all the way off!.

I've associated the problem to cell phone interferance.  It goes away when I toss my cell phone across the room (onto my bed).  As well, in my car, it only happens when I set my phone near the stereo unit.  Same goes for my alarm clock.

Technical Support / Problem With Screen Configuration
« on: July 14, 2006, 09:22:22 AM »
umm ... did you just add "Fullscreen=1"?

I don't even get 1920 x 1200 as a choice (but that's prolly b/c that option isn't available in windows display options ... monitor settings either).  So, is 1920x1200 something you can choose from the list, or did you just enter that into the config file? Do any other resolutions work properly?

Player's Corner / BUILDER FEEDBACK
« on: July 14, 2006, 08:52:02 AM »
I found myself in Drunken Pony's basement the other day with no way to get upstairs (to the common room).  ... not sure if that's fixed now since I haven't been IG very much (or maybe it was intentional).  But basically all the doors needed keys and I only had one at the time.

I gave Cosmic a little feedback last night on the Harpy Cliffs.  It was a very pleasant suprise, and made for a bit of RP ... a story about harpies luring ships into the trecherous coast, and a lighthouse made to warn them away.  (no more than a couple sentences, but it woulda been more had I not been so tired).

Cien had less pleasant suprise in Zhent Forest when she went skipping into the woods ... she quickly came hobbling out, feinted, and nearly died.  But she recoved (as did Kiki ... who somehow always seems to miracuosly escape life threatening situations).  Then Cien had a great time shooting those twizzles [bandits] in the bum as they bent over choking on the noxious fumes of Cien's "skunk magic" while Kiki (immune to skunk magic) flew in to exact death by pin pricks upon them.  Also, the pixie duo had a good time of luring them over nasty traps.  It was visually pleasing as well.  Good job.

Sorry, I haven't seen any of the rest as yet.

oh yeah, saw some of the coast Torin (re)did as well.  Good job there too ... Mz & Lysander will certainly enjoy that area (if I ever finish creating the house before).

A splendid solution. The effort is greatly appreciated. Cheers :D

I hope the results prove to be even greater than the effort.  Good luck to each and all of the selected GDMs.

I want to know what the Italian player said Zidane to set him off ....

The game was great.  I loved the pace of the entire game.  It's great watching great players when they're "feeling it" or "in the zone".  Like Henry spinning through three defenders then dishing a perfect pass off to a team mate.  I enjoyed the amazing plays on both sides of the ball.  Great Game!

Politically unexceptable?!!! ... I'm sorry, but there's more to nuclear weapony than politics ... about 10 megatons more.  It would politically irresponsible and morally unexceptable.  That is a uranium-enrichment plant! Christ, can you imagine the repercussions if a nuclear warhead struck that place?  Even one of those 2-5 megaton bunker-buster nukes could release who knows how much nuclear material into the environment!

Imagine the message that would send to the world ... "Hey you over there. Yeah you, the country building nukes.  You best stop that right now else we're gonna nuke your nukes!"
