General Discussion / Spore players?
« on: September 30, 2008, 08:50:00 PM »
I heard some of ya'll have been playing Spore lately.  Post in-game names, so we can add each other to our Buddy lists for new fodder to eat... I mean, befriend.

Spore name: LastWordz

Tip: Find interesting creators in the Featured Downloads and/or Popular Creations via the spore.com pages and add them to your buddy list.  As soon as I did this, plus added some interesting Sporecasts, the amount of cute Maxis stuff has diminished greatly - and now my universe is populated with very nice looking things. :D

Getting tired of the same ole tilesets?  Frustrated with broken elements of some of the original Bioware sets?  Want more variety for building with?

The CTP (Community Tileset Project) team is proud to release their first package (of 4 planned).

Includes:

Gothic Estates: Original HOF work by Chandigar, Testing and repairs by CTP

Gothic Interiors: Original HOF work by Chandigar, Testing and repairs by CTP

Dungeon LOK: Originally released by LOK. Additional work by CTP

Dwarven Halls: Originally released by JDA with extensive repairs by many.

Cave Ruins: Orig by Neverroofer. Additional tiles by CTP. Don't forget to duck when walking around in this set!

Expanded Elven City: Original by Pogo Mudder/Little Baron, Extensive Additions by CTP

Elven Interior: Original HOF work by Pasilli, extensive rework and repairs by CTP

Dusty Dungeon (RESKIN): by Ashtefere This reskins the original Bioware dungeon with a more dirty/dusty feel. Warning THIS WILL RESKIN ANY Bioware Dungeon you have in your mod.

Black Desert: By Pasili, Exclusively for the CTP.

Brick Interior: Expanded and Reskinned interior, by Pasilli for CTP.

Also includes CTP_Biofix - fixes various issues with original Bioware tilesets - some of these fixes were intended for an earlier patch, but for some reason were never implimented.

Also includes: CTP Doors - 40+ new door types for use in all doorways - includes a number of types and even curtains.

-------------------------------------------------------

All in all, seems to be a pretty solid release - but I've not personally checked it out yet.  I have played with many of these tilesets (the originals) before, and I've liked most of them - and with the improvements/fixing that CTP has done, I have no doubt they're much better.

Completely compatable with CEP, as there's no conflict of content.

This has been a long awaited release by many PW builders.  I'm confident that this team has done good work - and that it will definately qualify as a "must have" for many PWs.

-----------------------------------

Also recently released: CMP (Community Music Pack)

http://nwvault.ign.com/View.php?view=sounds.Detail&id=554

Contains many new songs for your listening pleasure.  Includes soundtracks from Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate 2, Icewind Dale, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, Morrowind, and numerous other sources - also contains a good number of original works that have been submitted to the Vault.  235 songs in total.

Definately worth a look - and consideration.

NWN2 Buzz / *sigh* Another Delay
« on: September 19, 2006, 12:06:54 AM »
The game will be released in the U.S. on October 31st - Halloween.

News here: http://nwvault.ign.com/fullstory.php?id=21253

On the plus side, there's new screenshots that look considerably better than ones released previously.  Looks like they've added a fair amount of polish to things... I suppose I can be patient.

If they delay the toolset again, however, I'll be extremely annoyed.

NWN2 Buzz / Pre-Order Toolset
« on: September 08, 2006, 01:35:24 PM »
Well folks, looks like the pre-order boxes are in stores right now @ places such as Best Buy, GameStop, EBGames, etc.  On the back of the pre-order box it says that people who buy the pre-order will be able to get the Toolset a month before game release.  It appears as if it will be fully functional - and the same as the one we'll get with the game (ie, its not a demo and not a beta).

It gives a website (inactive as of yet) to go to, and a code to enter in.

There's also another special thing, something about merchant pricing breaks and access to a custom weapon.

Obviously, I picked up a copy - and now am chewing at the bit, waiting for 9/17 or so to roll around. :)

Anyways - just a heads-up to those who don't often frequent the Bioware forums.

Player's Corner / Single Player Mod Goodness

Another Premium Module that got cancelled by Atari has made its way to the Vault: http://nwvault.ign.com/View.php?view=modules.Detail&id=5122

Georg Zoeller of Bioware has this to say about it:

Quote

It is awesome to see this module hit the Vault, it is one of the most ambitious modules ever made and it will be very worth the time to download for everyone.

A note on some of the included custom content: This module contains some very high profile custom content, including and probably most notable a preview (read: older) version of the TNO tileset by the DLA Team - the largest and coolest tileset ever

Content creators might want to hold off on using it just now as there is a good possiblity of the full, latest version of these resources being made available officially in the future, fully 1.68 proof of course. However, that shouldn't stop custom content fans from downloading it anyway and and getting a look at what the future holds...

Again, this is one of the most significant module releases to ever hit NWN and well worth everyones download time, go, get it!

NWN isn't dead until the fat Kobold sings, and he barely even started yet

From what little I've seen of it so far, its an impressive effort.  The tilesets are stunning.  The gameplay is reminding me of Baldur's Gate.  There's a goodly amount of flavor and conversation text-trees in it.

Overall, probably a good 20 or so hours of gameplay in it.

It also sports custom music, a couple custom movies, a in-game world-map system, wandering monsters (ala Baldur's), and a level of polish rarely seen in "community made" modules - and there's some excellent, and never seen before custom content within it.  Personally, I can't wait for the final versions of these and some of the additions in the upcoming 1.68 Bioware patch.

Well worth the 200+ meg download.

Hope ya'll enjoy - so far I'm enjoying it, and haven't even gotten out of the town.  I'll give a fuller review later on down the line when I get a chance to finish it.

Hope ya'll enjoy.

General Discussion / Oh those dumb PCs....

Thread intended to highlight silliness and follies of Characters in various PnP or cRPG settings.

I'll start it off with a fairly well known classic....

    Mark Steuer recounts this tale:

Many years ago (back when we all were still playing D & D), I ran a game where I pitted two groups against each other.

Several members of Group One came up with the idea of luring Group Two into a trap. You remember the Hand of Vecna and the Eye of Vecna that were artifacts in the old D&D world where if you cut off your hand (or your eye) and replaced it with the Hand of Vecna (or the Eye) you'd get new awesome powers? Well, Group One thought up The Head of Vecna.

Group One spread rumors all over the countryside (even paying Bards to spread the word about this artifact rumored to exist nearby). They even went so far as to get a real head and place it under some weak traps to help with the illusion. Unfortunately, they forgot to let ALL the members of their group in on the secret plan (I suspect it was because they didn't want the Druid to get caught and tell the enemy about this trap of theirs, or maybe because they didn't want him messing with things).

The Druid in group One heard about this new artifact and went off in search of it himself (I believe to help prove himself to the party members...) Well, after much trial and tribulation, he found it; deactivated (or set off) all the traps; and took his "prize" off into the woods for examination. He discovered that it did not radiate magic (a well known trait of artifacts) and smiled gleefully.

I wasn't really worried since he was alone and I knew that there was no way he could CUT HIS OWN HEAD OFF. Alas I was mistaken as the Druid promptly summoned some carnivorous apes and instructed them to use his own scimitar and cut his head off (and of course quickly replacing it with the Head of Vecna...)

Some time later, Group one decided to find the Druid and to check on the trap. They found the headless body (and the two heads) and realized that they had erred in their plan (besides laughing at the character who had played the Druid)...The Head of Vecna still had BOTH eyes! They corrected this mistake and reset their traps and the Head for it's real intended victims...

Group Two, by this time, had heard of the powerful artifact and decided that it bore investigating since, if true, they could use it to destroy Group One. After much trial and tribulation, they found the resting place of The Head of Vecna! The were particularly impressed with the cunning traps surrounding the site (one almost missed his save against the weakest poison known to man). They recovered the Head and made off to a safe area.

Group Two actually CAME TO BLOWS (several rounds of fighting) against each other argueing over WHO WOULD GET THEIR HEAD CUT OFF! Several greedy players had to be hurt and restrained before it was decided who would be the recipient of the great powers bestowed by the Head... The magician was selected and one of them promptly cut his head off. As the player was lifting The Head of Vecna to emplace it on it's new body, another argument broke out and they spent several minutes shouting and yelling. Then, finally, they put the Head onto the character.

Well, of course, the Head simply fell off the lifeless body. All members of Group Two began yelling and screaming at each other (and at me) and then, on their own, decided that they had let too much time pass between cutting off the head of a hopeful recipient and put the Head of Vecna onto the body.

SO THEY DID IT AGAIN!... [killing another PC]

In closing, it should be said that I never even cracked a smile as all this was going on. After the second PC was slaughtered, I had to give in (my side was hurting)...

And Group Two blamed ME for all of that...

So let that be a warning to you - don't let your head get cut off unless you really know what you're doing.

NWN2 Buzz / Getting a Jump on Map Building
    « on: July 25, 2006, 01:52:55 PM »
A game came out at the end of last month called Titan Quest - created by IronLore studios (age of empires?) and published by THQ.  Its basicly a Diablo 2 clone from what I hear (I never played the Diablo games) - but the graphics are rather intense.  Anyways, long story short - the game does come with an editor - and the map-making portion of it seems to be *very* similar to NWN2.  So, if you're looking to get a handle on how things will work in terms of map creation for NWN2, might not be a bad purchase while waiting. ;)

I can't watch it at work - but word on the forums say it shows off a really nice looking dragon, combat, and some spells.  Sounds like its fairly impressive - unfortunately, it'll be another 4 1/2 hours til I'll be able to see it... *grumbles*

NWN2 Buzz / Exterior Area Sizes
    « on: May 16, 2006, 08:56:54 PM »
Well - we now get some insight into why Obsidian has been quoting very large memory requirements for servers: http://nwn2forums.bioware.com/forums/viewtopic.html?topic=480891&forum=95

In the interview, Feargus states that exterior areas will be:

    Quote

    a 32 x 32 tile [area?], and the tiles are 40 m x 40 m, so you can have an area that is about 1250 m x 1250 m.

(actually, it works out to 1280 x 1280)

These are monsterously huge areas - roughly 4x larger than maximum possible size in NWN.  I'm not sure if this includes the "unwalkable scenic areas" that have been alluded to before or not.  Even if it does, its still a large amount of space to work with.

Needless to say, in the hands of skilled people - Exteriors are going to look absolutely stunning with the variety that will be able to be pulled off in terms of terrain shaping, texturing (and blending), and placeable layout.

I've not listened to the ALFA interviews as of yet, but I've heard a few things that are also interesting:

    1) Custom Content is loaded *before* character creation.  This means NO MORE OVERRIDES for CUSTOM CONTENT!  Yay!  What this also possibly means is that additional spells and PRCs and the like can be integrated much more easily than they could in NWN.  I'm quite excited about this.
