NWN2 Buzz / New (and encouraging) interview with Jon Galloway

Around in there, it's been announced that [the DM client] is being released on the same day as the game. Just have to download it.

Actually, buzz on the official forums for NWN2 is that Obsidian may have trouble getting the DM Client ready for "day 1" download. But it's a definite that they are working on it, and understand its importance to the community. So I feel sure it won't lag too far behind the game's release.

NWN2 Buzz / New (and encouraging) interview with Jon Galloway
« on: August 23, 2006, 12:21:33 PM »
There's a new 3-minute video interview out with Jon Galloway, Atari Senior Producer for NWN2. See it here (note you may have to sit thru an ad for something else first):

Windows Media version
QuickTime version

Important points from my perspective:
 He specifically states that "the
[mod] community is really important to us."
 "With the original title, the persistent world community especially was one of the greatest things about it. These people are really passionate about extending the title with user-created content." While not making any promises here, he at least implies that Atari will be supportive of development of persistent worlds like LotN.
 The toolset beta will reach the selected beta-testers hands in mid-September (one month before release date).[/list]
All good news, in my opinion. Most of the buzz on the official NWN2 forums has been concern that Atari, being in financial trouble, will ignore persistent world developers as being unprofitable. And since Atari "pays the bills" on the game's development, it's unlikely Obsidian could do much on their own to support us. But this seems to me to indicate that Atari wants to see persistent worlds developed.

NWN2 Buzz / Strongholds
« on: August 20, 2006, 05:50:28 PM »
Now that NWN2 release is getting close, it seems that Obsidian is updating their website frequently with links to reviews and interviews. I just finished watching an interview from 8/15 with Chris Avelone, a senior designer for NWN2. He talks a good bit about the stronghold system in NWN2. For the single-player campaign, it basically means you have a castle to call your own.

I just have to wonder if that system will be available for use in a PW. Having some built-in mechanics to allow different factions/guilds/cliques to have their own housing could add an interesting flavor to LotN2, don't you think?

Player's Corner / Hmm, I guess I'll just say something.
« on: August 19, 2006, 01:13:43 AM »
I've found occasion to notice a new player having trouble and offer to orient them, even go get a lowbie char of mine to help them get started. It's not something I do all the time, but I do it. And I do it because Cosmic, Chyelle, Wynter and Moth, all when signed in as players, did the same for me when I was new.

As for the DM's when they are being DM's, well ... I'm pretty outgoing, I just poke them and ask questions, and I've always gotten good feedback, as far as I can remember.

All that being said, I've seen DM's be busy dealing with a quest, or some problem or another, or just tired or grumpy for one reason or another. And I expect that it's at those times that new players don't get a cheery "Hello!"

Anyone else have a summary of their newbie experience, either positive or negative, to share?

NWN2 Buzz / Re: Curious about LOTN2
« on: August 15, 2006, 04:18:12 PM »
I'm really not qualified to say much here, but what the hell, I'm bored.

There is so much that we don't know about NWN2 right now, it's very hard to make definite plans. While the exterior areas of that game are beautiful, the data you must download for each of them is staggering. Obsidian has not spoken yet on how they will deal with that, to allow reasonable transition times into exterior areas.

Also, related to area size, there's some mumblings and guessing that it may simply not be possible to build a PW with more than 100 areas or so. Maybe not even that. Again, we just don't know at this point what the limitations are.

Alright, now that I've been through all the bad news and disclaimers, on to your questions.

I was just wondering if the possibility of LOTN2 has been/is being discussed.
Yes.

Quote from: "Haldadae"
Would it take place in the same region? With a rebuild, would the area of focus be shifted geographically?
Last I heard, the plan was to base it in the same general area, Faerun's The North. I would like to see coverage from Waterdeep to Icewind Dale east to the Anauroch, but there's no telling at this point what will really be possible.

Would the level of magic items be pushed way back down, as I've heard people mention was true of LOTN when it was TMB?
I haven't heard anything definitive on this. Personally, I favor a low-magic server. Balance is what I'm looking for. Spellcasters in LotN are pretty powerful, compared to other classes. I might be up for seeing a bit better armor and weapons on the existing LotN. But, since NWN2 is supposed to follow D&D 3.5 rules, which are supposed to offer better class balancing, maybe nothing more is needed.

Player Requests / Persistent Storage/Banks?
« on: August 13, 2006, 02:11:40 AM »
I have a few ideas on how to handle banking of gold fairly easily. Storage of items, however, gets complicated quickly. I'll look around on the NWVault to see what they have out there.

NWN2 Buzz / FiringSquad Interview with Feargus - July 21, 2006
« on: August 02, 2006, 10:28:12 PM »
Read it here:  http://www.firingsquad.com/games/nwn2_interview/

Good News: Feargus says the new toolset is one of the things he's most proud of in NWN2.

Bad News: Looks like the DM Client will be delayed ... and struggling Atari will have a big say in how much support will be delivered to the modding community after the game ships.

So basically ... nothing new. :)

Mike Doughty ~ "Busting Up A Starbucks"

It will always be
The end of time
The end of law
The end of life
The dogs will howl
And yank the leash
From tree to tree
From each to each

Does the man who makes the shoes own you, clown?
You can't even pry the nameplate off, now can you?
Fix it with your tiny fist there
James Van Der Beek and them sisters from Sister, Sister
The only one that's ever felt this is you
The force that's forcing you
To feel like busting up a Starbucks.

This bitter drink
Has made you drunk
The thoughts you think
Become unthunk
The sea's ablaze
The sky is too
The water's red
And the flames are blue

Does the man who makes the shoes own you, clown?
You can't even pry the nameplate off, now can you?
Fix it with your tiny fist there
James Van Der Beek and them sisters from Sister, Sister
The only one that's ever felt this is you
The force that's forcing you
To feel like busting up a Starbucks.

Nyack! Ronkonkoma! East Orange! Piscataway!
