And alas, the solution is found. The * key, switches between character and strategy modes. One of which (don't know which one I'm in now) gives you the old NWN camera option.
Strategy mode it is.
Although it seems that isn't even fully the original camera view. I played with the on/off buttons to try and emulate the ol' perfect view setting, but alas...
Strategy mode reminds me more of the old Baldur's Gate or Planescape: Torment games.
